NY Laser Hair Removal: Ruby Lasers

Ruby lasers were among the first commercially available hair removal lasers. These devices emit a deep red beam with a wavelength of 694nm.

Laser energy at this wavelength is readily absorbed by melanin in both the hair and the skin. For this reason, Ruby lasers are not a good option for people with darker skin types.

Commercially available Ruby laser models include:

Because Ruby lasers are safe and effective only for people with very light skin and dark hair, they have largely been supplanted by Alexandrite, Diode, and long-pulse Nd:YAG lasers. However they are sometimes still used to eliminate fine hairs on people with light skin types, as they are effective in this capacity.
