Laser Hair Removal: Alexandrite Lasers
Alexandrite lasers have a longer wavelength than Ruby lasers - at 755nm, they emit a red laser light that is at the edge of the visible spectrum.
Long-pulse Alexandrite lasers are among the most common in use for hair removal today. These lasers have a fast repeat rate and large spot size, allowing them to cover areas of the body quickly. For this reason, if you are having a large area treated, such as the whole back or legs, then the Alexandrite laser might be a good choice if you have light to olive skin.
The following are the most popular long-pulse Alexandrite lasers currently in use:
- GentleLase (Candela Corp.)
- GentleLase Plus (Candela Corp.)
- Apogee (Cynosure, Inc.)
These lasers have been cleared by the FDA as safe for "permanent hair reduction". The Alexandrite laser, particularly the GentleLase and GentleLase Plus, is the fastest on the market, and they make a good choice to investigate for everyone but those with brown skin or darker.
